.EDIT. For some reason the Sims 4, and Sims mobile aren't showing up on the poll. I tried to edit the poll, but I guess I can't because voting has already begun. Sorry for the confusion.END EDIT.' The Sims' is one of those rare games that gets a pass from me, where I would instantly shoot other games down.Yes, it's one of EA's most egregious money sponges (paid DLC after paid DLC to infinity). Yes it has less features now than it did in the glory days of 'The Sims 2'. (RIP Maxis)I get all that, but at the same time, this game has a special place in my heart that comes from the memories I have playing the original back in 1999, and growing up with the sequels ever since.I remember the simple fact that I could make two men kiss each other, and nobody even blinked, was so revolutionary to my 10 year old self. I'll never forget it. That (among tons of other reasons) is why I remain a fan to this day. That being said, I can't help feel that the game has lost its edge in the most recent incarnations (3+4). The graphics are great, and I feel like they've added enough new features to keep the gameplay fresh, and engage the community. (people have made some AMAZING content on the community hub)At the same time, I don't feel that sense of 'oh my god, I can't believe they went there!' The game feels so childish, and cartoony, that it's hard for a 26 year old like myself to have my characters feel deep or engage in 'adult' story lines. Aug 2, 2018 - If you've got to live the domestic life, after all, might as well make the most. And that's when it hit me: this is why I still prefer The Sims 3 to The. (Adult in this context meaning the darker/mature themed side of life: eg murder, drug use, crime etc, NOT necessarily meaning sexual)I guess the topic/ point of this thread is: What could EA/ We as a community do to make the game feel more mature/ cater to a more mature audience? Although I know they aren't 'officially' condoned by EA, do you know of any mods that would be relevant here? Also, just for shits and giggles, which was your favorite version of 'The Sims', and why?(#SimSelife, because why not?: p). Whilst I played and deeply loved The Sims in my youth, having spent all of my birthday and pocket money on expansion after expansion, The Sims 2 holds a special place in my heart and it probably always will. In terms of content and features, I feel that The Sims 2 made so many improvements on the first game whilst maintianing the feel. Again I ploughed any money I earned into expansion and stuff packs and the game always felt fresh because there were so many things I hadn't done yet. Moving into The Sims 3 though I couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness to a lot of what I was doing. I was constantly being bombarded with little ingame prompts for events and opportunities, meanwhile there was something less satisfying about the gameplay despite the glut of new features.I've not played the Sims 4, because I've heard of how stripped down it it. It honestly looks gorgeous and I really want to tangle with the new Create a Sim, but I can't justify the cost to buy yet more rehashed expansion and stuff packs to add in features that were commonplace in previous titles.I don't think maturity is what it lacks, it's always been kind of ridiculous. I'm trying to explain it without sounding pretentious or naive, but honestly the games lack soul. The extreme violence mod doesn't quite cut if for me in this area. I have this, domestic can. There was a story to every town in The Sims 2, like Veronaville with its Romeon and Juliet theme and Pleasantview with its continuity nod to Bella Goth's disappearance. The world of the Sims 3 was always moving, but it was hollow. More adult is a vage as vage can be term. I don't think the sims needs to be darker. I don't need my sims recovering from a 'juice' addiction. Actually that doesn't sound not bad so maybe.Yes, I realize it's a vague term, I tried to clarify in my OP. I guess what I am trying to get at, is that for a game that bills itself as a 'life simulator', they really only 'simulate' the sunny side of life. I feel like topics such as death, violence, broken homes, childhood bullies, homelessness etc., while uncomfortable, are still part of life. If you soften them, or sweep them under the rug, as The Sims tends to do, you limit the ability of your players to tell the story they want to tell.Whilst I played and deeply loved The Sims in my youth, having spent all of my birthday and pocket money on expansion after expansion, The Sims 2 holds a special place in my heart and it probably always will. The world of the Sims 3 was always moving, but it was hollow.Very interesting points, I can definitely relate to shelling out all your dough for the expansions. I agree with Your overall points about why the Sims 2 was best, (totally forgot about Medieval). Maybe you're right about the 'soul' being gone. I think that has a lot to do with why I feel like they don't push the envelope in terms of edgy or controversial content anymore. The game has simply gotten so big, and so important financially for EA, that they play it too safe. Shiny graphics content = $$$There are some interesting mods out there. I was able to find a pretty goofy one that makes the 'handbuzzer trick' lethal. Good for if I ever want to make 'The Joker' and throw him into my neighborhood haha. Anybody know of any other mods, or (safe) Sims 4 mod sites? Sims 2 for me too.Never got 4 because 3 didn't do it for me, and I figured I only get burned once thank you.I can still boot up 2 and see interactions that make me smile and can be almost human. Even from a girl who I designed to look like a monkey and a man with a comically disproportionate head.I think there were the occasional darker sides to the Sims. Sometimes they would have the desire to see the ghost of their enemy. Often my married sims would have the desire to become flirty with others. I guess social services is a thing that could happen if you missed something with your kid (although for the most part they could be left stewing in their own crap on the floor but still wouldn't be taken as long as they were fed. Wow, there's another kind of messed up thing). And don't forget the cow plant where you drink the life essence of your neighbors. Yummy.Still, you've piqued my interest there into looking for darker concepts beyond my own twisted imagination. Interested if I could find some mods that added more 'gravitas' to the game. Where becoming unbalanced or not meeting 'social norms' had more far reaching consequences. Or just adding Lovecraftian Horrors into the mix. I'll reply to this even though it means I'll have to admit at playing The Sims but whatever. The Sims 2 was the best one in my opinion almost entirely because of The Fears system. Newer games just don't have enough failure states that cause things to go badly for your Sims. In fact, The Sims 4.there didn't appear to be much of anything. The whole thing mostly revolved around clicking on things and watching them do all sorts of wacky animations. I guess there was a fanbase for that.I prefer it when they have enough of an AI that they'll pursue and avoid certain things and leaving them to their own devices can be rather interesting. I want to see them have mental breakdowns and just do totally batshit crazy things. Basically, I liked them a lot more when they seemed more like weird aliens thinly disguised as humans. Nowadays they are just kind of I dunno, really dull. That and they all act like 20 something party goers; nothing interesting happens.I guess I am not so much a Sims player, so much as I really like watching AI interact with each other to see what happens. I was never the person who held their hands a lot. I would make adjustments and watch them try and cope. A bit like a kid shaking up an ant farm I suppose. Sims 2 seemed to nail this the best. That and Sims 2 was a huge improvement over 1, while also having the same feeling. My favorite one one is the Sims 2. Nostalgia probably, but I do have better reasons why. Since I have no imagination, I like to play premade Sims. The Broke family was being a single mom raising a child with a teenager that has to work part time, and this is exactly the kind of thing I want in a Sims game. I'll reuse what I said in another thread: Instead of asking things like 'Should I become a vampire?' The game should ask 'Should I spend more time with my child, or earn more money to make sure he/she has a future.' What is engaging is trade offs or opportunity costs, as these asks you questions about real life, whereas picking whether a Sim is a vampire celebrity rockstar superhacker or not is really no different from picking the hair color of that Sim. At most, you get more flavor options, but it is hardly a meaningful choice. Even something silly like vampirism in the Sims 2 was a big deal because vampires in that game can die from sunlight, while vampires in the Sims 3 can't. This means that your Sim doesn't have to be nocturnal, which defeats the purpose of the choice entirely. In my opinion the childishness is not the themes entirely, but having the right decisions. For example, if murder was added in the Sims, and you could just kill anyone without any consequence, I would say that this is extremely silly and some stupid fantasy. The way to make the game more 'adult' in my opinion is to add meaningful choices and consequences. Having memories shape your Sim's life would probably be more interesting than picking out the 'Green Thumb' trait in the Sims 3 to min-max your Sim. Having a certain trait like being shy should actually change the game completely, where the Sim should refuse to talk to people or have more - than + socializing, and your Sim would have to cope or else spiral into a NEET. That would be more interesting than the consequence of Sim having -20 moodlet near people or something meaningless. Ive played since the first sims was released and for me the high point was sims 3 and the open world. To me the sims has always been the ultimate RPG, where i would create a new family and role play them. With the latest being a super villain living in a missile silo who is determined to destroy the world thanks to time travel and robots altered to be evil:)i skipped sims 4 it seemed like such a step back from sims 3 that even someone like me who purchased all the dlc said nope giving this a miss. For my personal favourite, definately Sims 3. There's just so much content at this stage, and it suits my playstyle (which is kind of deliberately weird). I've watched my partner play sims 4 though, and I do really like some elements of it (especially the mood system, which seems to make the Sim AI much more consistent and understandable).I'm not so sure about making it 'darker'. It always seemed to me that the Sims (in addition to being an excuse by EA to sell fictional furniture and clothing at real world prices) is also quite a cleverly observed reference to classic TV sitcoms and soap operas, which did have a kind of enforced wholesomeness to them, so I've always kind of enjoyed that in a way. I've played a fair bit of the sims 1 + 4 expansions and a fair bit of the sims 2 + 0 expansions. I'd have to say that 2 was the 'best' one. It was a massive jump from the Sims 1 in terms of both graphics and gameplay and therefor started better as opposed to having to surpass the prior game before being good. They all have the 'dlc to death' problem, even 1 did. Admittedly though I'd say that 3 is now my favorite. It had a rough start going from all the expansions of 2 to a barebones 3 game but most of the basic features weren't inherently missing (where as I feel 4 came out with the least content to start with and released basic features as dlc and patches later). The Sims 3 had expansions that were almost on par with 2, with some of them even being repeats (like college, magic, etc). In the end it more or less ended up a prettier, open world 2 and that's why it ended up my favorite, but it didn't start that way. Just my thoughts. That would be more interesting than the consequence of Sim having -20 moodlet near people or something meaningless. That would be pretty cool. I can't really disagree with it except I'm not really at a stage where I want my games to make me said. The actually issue with the idea is that the sims have has been a game of subtleties. It's always been kind of a cartoonist game mostly because it is so big that it's hard to do detail well. Wow, lots of great insights. I guess the overall sentiment is that most people really don't really want that sort of content in a sims game. Surprising, honestly, but hey.In my opinion the childishness is not the themes entirely, but having the right decisions. For example, if murder was added in the Sims, and you could just kill anyone without any consequence, I would say that this is extremely silly and some stupid fantasy.I agree it would be stupid without consequences, but in the new 'Get to Work' expansion, you can actually play as a homicide detective, investigate crimes, and arrest/process suspects into jail.It would be really interesting to have a dynamic where if your sim did assault/murder another sim, your sim would be investigated by the police. With adult content, part of the sims charm is it gives you a digital dollhouse in every aspect. If we are to add more mature content in sims 4 then Flirty, Tense, Dazed and Sad Deaths will be required to give out death by sexual axphiaphation, stress related stroke, depression and Overdoses. Mean actions should give sims the opportunity to mug other sims and raise romantic relationship levels at the cost of Friendship points such as aggressively hitting on other sims or blackmailing.Think of the failed Sims Clones like Playboy the Mansion, Desperate Housewives and Singles Flirt Up Your Life. They were focused on the sexual aspects of the sims and didnt bother to flesh the other aspects of the dollhouse. Also, I'd like to thank the Escapist community for not questioning why I'm the kind of girl who takes virtual selfies of herself hanging out alone by the public bathrooms at the park. Anyway, I remember this old FAQ which had an interesting out-look on 'Evil Simmies'Hit Ctrl-F and search: 21 The Darker Side of the SimsAdmittedly it's for the Sims 2, so I'm not sure how relevant it is to the current series, but I reckon with a bit of imagination, you could replicate some of the results/ideasAnother interesting one is this one:Which gave a lot of new life to the Sims 2. Check out the Mafia one! It's hella awesome!Still that's for the Sims 2. A little research gave me this one:That looks really cool particularly the Apocalypse or Cultist challenges.Hope that helps everyone! Thanks! I'll totally check those out!I got the Sims 2 Complete Edition on Origin for free from their 'On the House' promotion a while back. I haven't played it in a while, because the resolution only goes up to a certain point, so the graphics are all stretched out and super pixilated. It kind of gave me a headache after a while. Maybe this will be a reason for me to go back and pick it up again. SnipI played Sims 3 first then Sims 2, and I think that for the most part the only thing that's better about Sims 2 is the mechanics of the Sims themselves. Thanks to the aspiration and the wants and fears system which can be modified through gameplay the personalities of the Sims can be heavily affected by the player one way or the other even after creation, while in Sims 3 the personalities of the Sims are pretty much locked in from creation and are more limited in how they are determined. This made day to day gameplay much more interesting when everything you order a Sim to do effects what they choose to do whenever they don't have your input. However, due to the lack of an open world and a bunch of little annoyances that Sims 2 has that Sims 3 doesn't I ultimately like Sims 3 better, just a little bit, and there seems to be a lot more to do in general in Sims 3 than there is in Sims 2. However, the series has grown quite stale to me so even if Sims 4 wasn't a lazily made POS that takes away features from previous games in the series while taking away the vast majority of the expansion content (AGAIN) instead of integrating that into it's base game and adding from there while ultimately adding next to nothing I'd probably still have little desire to bother with it.Wow, lots of great insights. I guess the overall sentiment is that most people really don't really want that sort of content in a sims game. Surprising, honestly, but hey. It's not really surprising and coming into this thread it was what I was expecting. The Sims have always been about parodying life and it's a big part of what the fans like it for. While it has skirted the edge of more mature subjects such as death they haven't been able to do so without being over the top silly about it because being comical is ultimately what the series is about, and the sad fact is that it's really pretty difficult to make mature subjects funny without being either offensive or resorting to black and gross out humor, which only really works for some people. With this series the developers have decided to stick with more universal comedy while still portraying life as accurately as they can, and while they could try to tackle more mature themes of life I don't think they really have what it takes to get that right, so I'm glad they stick with what they're good at. Teenage Pregnancy The subject of teenage pregnancy might not be as taboo as it once was, with MTV glamourising it as a 'trend' nowadays, but it's hardly something that will come standard with The Sims 4 or even in an Expansion Pack for that matter. With this mod comes teenage Woohoo, which means you could end up making your own version of Juno or Saved with your creations. However, just so you know, pregnant Sims are moody and require a lot of attention, and a teenager is even worse. Could you just imagine the pressure of highschool, a part-time job, pimples, a bun in the oven AND telling your parents about it? You're in for a rough ride. But, if you feel your teenage Sim needs more drama in her life (you terrible, horrible person), the mod can be downloaded at various websites like Mod The Sims, Sims VIP or Nraas.
