Welcome to!A subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. So I recently picked up both Napoleon and Empire, installed Darthmod immediately because I read that it improved the games alot. I am just a bit puzzle to the strategy of the battles. I understand Rome 2 and Shogun 2 pretty well but I'm just barely winning battles in Napoleon and Empire (I play on Very hard). I do my best to get good flanking and re-position my artillery but I'm not sure if I have the basics down. I'd like to know which units are typically good vs which, when to charge for melee, what's your typical strategy, how would I use the Musket and Melee Calvary, etc.Post in here or Add my steam if you'd like to discuss: Sayanything14. Although out of practice and never particularly great at the games, i can only give basic advice, mainly in napoleon. Firstly, as far as ive seen, for napoleon, lancers are the only real game in town for cav, heavy cav tire too quickly. Since all line infantry can form squares, your cav is best used for repetitive harrassment to force squares, allowing your line infantry to gain the upperhand. If the enemy forget to form squares, youneed a good strong hit to make them really pay for it. The latest update to the Mythos Edition of the marvellous Darthmod project for Napoleon: Total War has landed according to ModDB, which makes this a good excuse to highlight Darthmod for any Total. Light cav that arent lancers really cant sit in the combat and heavy cav are too slow and tire to easily to be effective at harrassing. You need the lancers hit and run. Also, in a cav on cav fight, the initial damage caused by the lancers charge iss normally sufficient that if for some reason they end up going toe to toe with dragoons or cuirassiers, they do enough damage to be cost effective. Never charge your cav in unsupported, youd think this was obvious but in other games, you tend to get punished less for making this mistake. At least for Napoleon total war darthmod, what they do is make the files look like they are vanilla. (Not sure how but if i remember correctly that is how they solve problem of steam freaking about mod for napoleon. Unlock All the Factions in Napoleon Total War. Modifications Napoleon: Total War Mod - The Great War v5.0 The Great War is a total conversion modification that brings the history, combat. Excluding light infantry, just about any unit can wreck a cav unit with ease. Light infantry can do a lot of damage but the cant form square and are sucepable to moral shock, cannons can just cannister shot the living hell of the approaching cav you you arent careful. Cav are hard to use well but are one of the most important elements of your army as if in a situation where you find you simply have the wrong army for the battle, the cav are one of the best units for changing that. Their harrassment can neuter an infantry advantage easily, if unguarded, they can also ruin an artillery advantage and with nippy cav, can also turn around a cav disadvantage by luring enemy cav into dangerous areas of the field. Thats the first piece of advice, master your cavalry, timing is key if well understood, even online, regardless of the skill of your opponent, being better with cav gives you an edge at controlling the progression of the battle.second piece of advice, play aggressively. Dont sit back and let them come to you, go out and force the fighting to take place where you want it to. For a few more things, france and prussia are probably the best 2 teams, prussia have some outstanding light infantry as well as decent lancers and good artillery, france have the best lancers, the best round shot cannons and the best infantry in the game, the old guard are really useful not just for the effect they have on the enemy but the effect they have on your own troops. The best tactic tends to be to overwhelm one flank and then roll up the rest of their army by having the men who just won their engagement move to fire into the flank of the next group along. Best ways to overwhelm a flank may be to focus your cavalry harassment there, move your light infantry to aid in the fire there or place your guard units to fight there. Another way may be to attack off centre so you have an overlap on one side allowing them to overlap on the other side whereby you can either make you the flank you are focusing on collapses faster than your vulnerable flank by the tactics above, or by focussing your extra elements on your weaker flank to keep it from breaking. 6 pounder horse artillery can be very useful for long sustained musket fights and if the enemy is preoccupied you can have time to quickly move them up into cannister shot range of the enemies flank and let rip. Another quick thing,in napoleon for some reason, cant remember if fixed in darth mod, russian troops have unusually high charge bonuses. You cant see it in their stats as it only displays the really relevent stats to their specific roles which are range and accuracy but russian line infantry seem to have charge stats nearly as good as lancer cav, just less speed. I hope its been patched but it pretty much made russia a bayonet happy team where getting shot didnt really matter as your charge will break enemy lines really fast anyway this guys videos on napoleon were great at displaying effective use of napoleon forces, the guy made a real effort to be educational. KEY POINT!-THE ONE FOR FIRES FIRST NORMALLY WINS-Use your cavalry, artillery or light troops to force the enemy to advance into your main battle line. Moving troops can't fire so if you have your guys set up and you force them in by say, taking out their artillery or cavalry (and then capitalising on that advance) you will normally do very well.bring varied artilerry (howitzers and foot art): this allows you to be flexible in deploying your artillery no matter the map.Mounted gunners, are hugely effective in Empire and Napoleon. They are also very cheap in comparison to heavy cavalry. So any form of dragoons, cazadores or camelry that can fire in the saddle are a good idea.Light troops. Have a skirmishing contingent of light infantry or skirmishers (light infantry are more effective tho IMO as they have larger units and reload faster). Also use light infantry doctrine right in front of your line infantry. This will allow you to fire over the top of your skirmishers head and put out more fire in total.Prioritise your targets. Elite infantry and cavalry are devastating to your standard 'Foot' troops so make sure you focus them down with artillery, skirmishers or cavalry before they can get volleys off or charge you as your lads wont stand for either unless you are also using elites.FINALLY.Just like all Total War and strategy games, combat comes down to rock paper scissors when dealing with an opponent. You have to try and gain an advance in the artillery, cavalry and/or skirmishing component before the main engagement as that gives you the control of the fight. What I like to do in the opening of every battle is have my artillery set up and firing on the enemies with 'barrage' to make them more effective, whilst drawing away enemy cav with mine on the flanks. HOPEFULLY this is a double whammy, takes out some of the enemy cannon while they are limbered and also drags out the enemy cav from cover and into the sights of your guns!An example of this in practice:Hope this was helpful!. Just an extra note seeing as you said you played shogun first, when using mounted gunners, be careful if you end up spotting an opportunity to charge with them, they will fire their carbines while charging which is good however if you order more than one unit into the charge, their lines can cross in an attempt to both hit the centre of the squad you are charging at and since they dont care about friendly fire, they can end up shooting eachother. So be careful.and also, try to make sure when advancing your line is fully formed before you get into range, a staggered line will cost you a lot of men if you either choose to fight in it or try to rearrange. If you catch the enemy like that, it can be a good opportunity to quickly rush closer to them, allowing you to not only take the first volley but also be able to do it from closer. The point about mounted gunners is true, however I try and keep my cavalry in seperate groups on the same flank, i.e. Gunners up front harassing and my unit or units of heavy cav / lancers close by to support against counter charges by enemy cav. When it comes to fighting against a disorganised line, one of the best ways to make that happen in the first place is to use your cavalry, esp mounted gunners.I cannot express how important these are to my strategies, seeing as no other unit has the flexibility, mobility and damn right lethal output for the cost. They are so damn cheap!. I tend to stick to lancers. Total War Center Darth Mod Napoleon Total WarAnd i bring a strong contingent. Use them to wrap around the enemy cav if they come for me, if not, i can get good hit and runs on their infantry, general and artillery. I tend to spend most of my micromanagment on my infantry as they tend to do most of the fighting so making sure they are dealing out maximum damage for least casualties tends to win me the battle, excluding the usually effective tactic of just cannoning the fuck out of them till the come to you to be cannister shotted to fuck. Doesnt work when not against ai though. How do mounted gunners fair against line infantry? Line tend to have better range and numbers but is there a way to effectively harrass them in a way that other cav cant? Ive thought of charging them to force them into square before firing a volley at them and retreating but ive never managed it without severe casualties, have you found a good way for that? So I set up my home wifi connection, put in the correct password, etc, and honeycomb recognizes it and shows an excellent signal. But when I hit 'connect', nothing happens. Acer one 10 wifi not working. No matter what I try, it won't connect, or even give me an error. Its why i use lancers, line infantry in napoleon are horrific to fight with cav so i favour the high charge damage since sitting in combat gets your cav killed. I dont go head to head using mounted gunners against line. That's just asking for a bad time! Darth Mod tends to favour cav once they get in, if the infantry is out of square. Even a good charge can actually break a square formation which is even more badass. As to attempting to skirm against line infantry, I like to use my gunners with another unit say, light infantry or other cavalry to get the unit responding to something else, then as they move, charge in with the volley and either 1. Continue in if the morale is down or 2. Bail if they are stable.you'll find it much easier to go for chain routes and morale damage than actual head to head kills. Especially if you've got rid of the enemy cav, which like I said is the first priority. If that fails, you probably dont have any gunner left anyway:D. DarthMod Napoleon 'Epic Edition' got finally the last gameplay update called (Two plus) which is based on the valuable feedback of many players. What it includes:Version 2.6 'Epic Edition'.Better Musket Accuracy Balance ideal for situations like 'Ready. Meaning that muskets are now better at close range fire due to more effective targeting calibration and you can rout units more easily with correctly timed volleys (as the AI).Formation improvements that make ΒΑΙ not to prefer so much the angled/flank attacks that could make it not use its artillery always properly.AI Diplomacy stances less strict so to give more breathing space to minor nations against the big nations. The AI should now attack/defend/make musket lines even more effectively. Holds the city overhaul skyrim special edition. Simply hit the download link and the.exe setup file will download, and you do not need any extra software to extract any sort of zipped file. In addition to this, I ran the mod manager as an administrator anyways just to be sure. I found it much easier to install the manager and future mods to a folder on the drive root; I picked the same drive as the steamlibrary directory that my Skyrim Special Edition install was located. Simply choose an install location and you're on your way!Note: I highly suggest NOT installing Mod Manager or anything else within Windows' program file directory, unless you want to worry about admin privilege requests down the road. It should also use its reserves more efficiently.Tweaks in morale. Welcome to my DarthMod Napoleon Total War Ireland Campaign!
