Avast will still receive all virus definitions and program updates, which allow you to manually run scans to check for issues on your PC. However, if passive mode is enabled, Avast Antivirus can not actively protect you. Enable Avast self-defense module: enables extra protection against active malware, which can deactivate or remove your antivirus program. Enable hardware-assisted virtualization: improves the performance of virtualization on your PC. Avast Antivirus uses hardware virtualization in anti-rootkit, Sandbox, self-defense, and CyberCapture components. If Avast detects other virtualization software on your PC, it automatically disables this setting. If Avast Antivirus is not able to recognize virtualization software installed on your PC, and you encounter performance or compatibility issues, we recommend temporarily unticking this option. Load Avast services only after loading other system services: delays the initiation of Avast Antivirus until system services are loaded. Enabling this setting will leave your computer unprotected during startup, so it may be vulnerable to infection at this time. Repair App: resets your software configuration by fixing or replacing program files that may be out of date, corrupted, or missing. We recommend making a backup of your customized settings before repairing Avast, as some settings may return to their default configurations. Add & Modify Compoments: enables you install or uninstall individual protective components. We do not recommend uninstalling components unless it is for troubleshooting purposes. Back Up Settings: enables you to create a backup file of your customized Avast settings for use on a different PC. Restore Settings: enables you to input a backup file of your customized Avast settings used on a previous PC. Reset to Default: resets your Avast Antivirus settings to their default values. Hi Greg, thank you for your response. I think there may be some confusion as to what I am running. To clarify, I am only running one antivirus program on each of my computers. One computer runs Avast (this is my older Toshiba). My new computer (a Dell)has McAfee which came pre-installed by Dell. Because I have these other antivirus programs running I have turned off Windows Defender. I never had a problem in the past with these installations and I have used Avast for years. My Toshiba started showingthe failure to install definitions with the 6/27/18 definition update # 1.271.146.0. So far there have been failures for the 7/11/18, 8/27/18, 9/10/18/ and 9/17/18 definition updates. My Dell so far shows only one definition update failure for 10/9/18 #1.277.832.0.Interestingly these failures started to occur after the Windows 10 Feature update to Version 1803. The Toshiba was updated to Version 1803 on 6/7/2018 and the Dell was updated on 8/24/18 (actually I think I purchased the computer with this update alreadyon it).I don't know if this makes any difference in your suggestions but thought I should clarify to be more helpful. I was also wondering if the reason the definitions don't update is maybe because of some change in version 1803 that prevents the updates if WindowsDefender is turned off?Thank you,Cindy. Hi Cindy,Check to see if your 'Periodic Scanning' button on the Virus & Threat Protectionscreen in Windows Defender is set to 'ON'. Windows Defender must be inpassivemode in order to work in concert with 'other' antivirus programs. The PeriodicScanning button puts WD into passive mode.In that mode Windows Defender is allowed to remain 'updated' and can be usedfor scans, only. With the button off, WD is deactivated by the presence of anotherantivirus program, and wont respond to anything. It seems that v1803 has caused problems in this regard, in some PCs. If you findthat your Periodic Scanning button is in fact 'ON', then it may not be functioningproperly. You might try turning your button 'OFF', and restart. Then turn it back 'ON' andrestart again. Then try the manual definition update, 32bit or 64bit described byAndre in this thread. If this procedure does not offer relief from your problem, and you have the meansto reinstall either of your third party programs, try uninstalling that one. Be sure touse the removal tool for that program. If Windows Defender now performs as it should, your problem is a conflict thatthe periodic scanning button is not preventing. Try reinstalling your program.Be sure to turn the periodic scanning button to 'ON'. And see if the re-installationnow allows the button to function as it should. If it does, that's good! If it doesn't,that may mean that solution to your problem will have to come in v1809.Good Luck, Glen. Hi Cindy -Defender is turned off if you have one of those other antiviruses running. So I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and try running only built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, best Windows performance, least issues, and is from Microsoft whoknows how to protect their OS best.
